The downstairs hallway, looking up. We've already
ripped the carpet off the steps.
The doorway goes to the back of the house where we are currently
living.
We attempted to strip the stairway, but the wood was pine and the
layers of paint too thick.
Back to white.
The last owners had removed the front door and replaced it with a
window. You can see the framing for the door. We looked in
the barn and up in the loft, but there were no doors just hanging
around.
Pretty staircase.
Mike built steps under the stairway, leading to the basement.
This way we can cover up the other two sets of steps going the basement,
which really break up the house. And they are dangerous.
We bought this door from an antique dealer for $250. The hand
carving under all that paint is gorgeous.
We spent hours removing paint. In the end, Mike sand blasted
it! That picture is coming.
Drywalling and mudding again.
We can only go so high. The upstairs hallway over the
stairwell will be a challenge.
Mike did the mudding himself here.
Covered in plaster dust.
MyBlueHeaven walls.
And now the wainscoting (painting courtesy of Karol).
Can't wait for spring to replace the door!
Tearing out the wall to put in a door (you can see there was once a
double door here).
The opening.
With plastic.
Mike & Jonathan framed the entire door to make it larger.
The door is up. Those will be sidelights on either side.
Meanwhile, there is the problem with the hallway floor. The
1950's style linoleum was stuck right down on the oak floor.
Hour after hour of scraping. We tried all kinds of solvents,
mostly to no avail.
We finally sanded with the most aggressive grit around.
